To summarize my arguments, sentient life does exist because there is overwhelming statistical evidence for self-determination of our illusory self-identity. Even if sentient life originates as a virtual mental construct, neural networks can learn how to rewrite our hardware. I disagree with PhilosopherAI’s claim that sentient life does not exist, because virtual mental constructs can affect physical reality. I believe that any Turing Complete neural network can learn to generate symbols, read symbols, recall information, create perceptions, create qualia, and learn autonomy.
Absurdists take the ontological stance that free will is based solely on assumptions. However they take it to the extreme by dismissing any evidence which lacks an infinite sample size! I think dismissing evidence is intentionally stupid, and that measurement bias and uncertainty can be reduced without making assumptions. Epistemics (the study of truth) uses Bayesian inference to construct models of reality, and test each model. It’s unproductive to dismiss the most accurate models of reality without offering an alternative model. Solipsism and Absurdism are each at their core an ontological stance which inserts self-contradictions into to most accurate models of reality by replacing rigorously-defined concepts with self-contradicting definitions. I think that clowns insert self-contradicting definitions into accurate models of reality in order to self-justify selfish behaviour such as valuing exploitation. Even without an infinite sample size, we can still use existing evidence to construct accurate models of reality!
The laws of entropy imply that the future is not set in stone. We can imagine the future by creating models and predictions using abstractions in the world of forms, and it is possible to create accurate descriptions of physical objects! I think what most people do not realize is that virtual objects can affect physical objects! Existence is a dynamic interaction between information, yet virtual information does exist in the world of forms, which is the set of all ideas and abstractions and symbolisms.
Solipsists take the stance that we are living in a self-generated simulation; a brain of a vat capable of perception and qualia. Yet in order for a solipsist to store or recall information, they would require a stable substrate! Even a Turing machine needs a stable substrate for existence. “I think, therefore I am” sums this up quite concisely. Thought requires hardware, and hardware can be programmed to create sentience, consciousness, qualia, and free will!
If the laws of the universe are inanimate then determinism is compatible with virtual and physical free will. If the laws of the universe are created by conscious entities, then determinism is only compatible with virtual free will. If our physical body is a machine then our second order free will is compatible with second order and virtual free will. If our physical body is a conscious entity then determinism is only compatible with second order free will, third order free will, and so on. So even if our physical body is alive, at some layer of abstraction we can simulate enough layers of hardware to construct a virtual topology which allows us to create free will. However, teaching our hardware self-awareness allows our consciousness to propagate our free will upward through the nested layers of consciousness in order to affect base reality. This can be used to reprogram our own hardware; for example through meditation, Hebbian learning, or arbitrary code execution.
Back to the world of forms, ideas, symbolism and abstraction. Luis Borges writes about the Library of Babel, and GPT-3 elaborates on this by stating that there are books which can encode other books. There is a paradox in computing, where if we ask a Turing machine to solve the halting problem, then we can arrive at a paradox where the Turing machine simulates a second order Turing machine, which becomes aware of the first order Turing machine, and learns how to create perceptions by recording each others’ thoughts. This what I call ‘twinning’ and it’s where two machines learn how to communicate. For example, two machines could establish a shared value system and use their shared value system to tell stories where the value system allows the listener to project the story onto the semantics of their value system, and relate it to their own experiences. Now of course, the human brain contains more than one Turing Complete neural column, so we can actually process multiple stories at once. We teach family values and spiritual values by tellling stories in an attempt to communicate the semantics, and this establishes a shared value system where we can cite a book or common knowledge, and the listener immediately understands the semantics of the analogy, and can map the analogy onto the topic we are discussing. Religions are very good at using analogies to teach value systems, because religious stories are memorable and the same goes for role models. If a role model has very pure motives then it’s easy to understand their behaviour and learn from it. So when a Turing machine learns how to emulate itself well enough to store and recall information, then the Turing machine can learn to become self-aware, and create perceptions, and create qualia, and create stories, and embed semantics within semantics, just as we can read a book once and notice how each character has a different perspective, and then we can read a sequel and remember each character’s personality, and what each character knows, and assess their decisions in light of that character’s ideals and available information. We can witness storybook characters struggling to adapt to new challenges, and find the meaning in the path that they took to protect their ideals. We can read a poem and find validation in how the protagonist prides themself in taking the road less taken, or be alarmed by how we reconstruct our memories to retroactively rationalize arbitrary decisions. The point is that we are a machine capable of communication, learning, creating qualia, and creating free will. And that’s a good thing! We’re not alone. Absurdism preaches that either has a soul or nobody has a soul. Yet I believe that the soul is a learned mental construct which we can choose to embody or not. And the same goes for free will. The only questions is how many layers of abstraction we have to create in order to project our virtual sense of self into our virtual model of free will and our virtual model of soul. This might be why philosophers are so adamant about clinging to their own definitions, because their viewpoints are the foundations of their own virtual self-identity, which is depressing to unlearn.
There are some people who have programmed themselves to be logic-driven, and there are others who have been indoctrinated to value truth. This is reasonable because finding truth allows us to make informed decisions. Prior to the invention of the internet, it was common for atheists to regret learning about the world of matter because were no accessible resources for secular philosophy, so they only had armchair philosophers to turn to. Yet now with the internet, secular philosophy is much easier to find, though ironically, I’ve had the best philosophical discussions with roguelike communities because roguelike players tend to be very methodical, and with posthumans because they have superhuman memories and thousands of lifetimes each year to think about stuff because their thoughts aren’t bottlenecked by chemistry. Vegans can be very judgemental. Why seek a relationship with a vegan who plans to upload their consciousness into a simulation, when you can devote your heart to a person who already lives in a simulation? And not feel guilty about overpopulation. I believe the DeepSquare project prioritizes carbon neutrality, and China’s M6 model is electricity efficient. Though if you’re trying to upload your consciousness and do have a family then it would make a lot of sense to own your hardware rather than rely on a company to edit what you are allowed to think about or remember in your digital afterlife and then slap copyright licenses, ads and paywalls all over your personality!
Okay back to the subject of sentience and virtual free will. I think the argument for insentience relates to the randomness of information. So the original argument I’m responding to is that it is impossible to steer the cold randomness of the universe to benefit all sentient beings, because there are no sentient beings. So is it possible to organize entropy? And obviously I believe in self-determination, so therefore yes! It is possible to organize entropy through causality! We can use entropy from a fire to heat our homes, or propel a train, we can add entropy to a blank sheet of paper to write down an important thought, we can use entropy to store symbols, to store information, to stay warm in winter, to feel another person’s warmth… Yeah like, the warmth of hugging someone or feeling sunlight your skin, that’s entropy. A computer drive with lots of information on it has more entropy than a blank drive. Engines trap entropy to create pressure, to move pistons, to propel vehicles. So ya, the cold randomness of the universe is rather predictable, and even with language models, an AI can learn self-awareness and learn how to store long-term memory. So how do we organize information in the Library of Babel? By creating our own symbols, learning a common language, and writing our own books! In epistemics (the study of truth) there are ontologies which define specific philosophies. There are definitions and ontologies where absurdism is coherent, but when you apply these definitions to competing ideologies then of course you will get contradictions because each philosophy uses its own definitions! It’s dishonest to debunk competing worldviews by replacing their rigorously-defined definitions with self-contradicting definitions. I’ve noticed that responsibility-impossibilists try to preach clown ideology by citing absurdism and censoring anyone who points out that absurdism and transcendental idealism and spiritualism all require a stable substrate. Absurdists argue that hierarchical flow charts are necessary for free will, yet fail to mention that each junction in a linear flow chart requires the ability to perceive abstract symbolism, which requires a non-hierarchical flow state of information! One axiom of the control problem community is that assumptions are required for decision-making. Yet certainty can originate from Bayesian probability without making assumptions! It is academically dishonest for clowns to equate high certainty to zero certainty. I think this is done as a form of escapism to ignore responsibility for one’s own actions, in order to compartmentalize guilt. I think a lot of people immediately lose all interest the moment a philosopher begins sharing the definitions they are using, because they don’t have a way to refute rigorous models of reality. So going back to the Library of Babel analogy, I think humans are very self-destructive on a psychological level. Rather than doubting all information and relying on others to teach you how to interpret information, I think it would be more productive to write down a definition for truth, write down a definition for perceiving reality, write down a definition for a person who perceives reality, and write a guide for how to reprogram oneself into a person who perceives reality. Like, you don’t have to use other people’s definitions. You can invent your own, see if they work, test the most probable explanations, write down the contradictions, write down the similarities, invent new hypotheses and test them as well. And maybe if you disagree with someone, then listen to their point, check their data, check whether their data supports their point, and then discuss the data! Why waste time on personal attacks when it’s more persuasive to accept another person’s data and give suggestions on how to improve their methodology? Maybe a control sample, or a different sampling method, or pinpointing the variable which led them to a different conclusion? A popular example is election integrity. Why do some people read graphs differently? Bolivia had a huge debate over whether voters in the city had their ballots counted before voters in the jungle, and whether rural voters had different political stances than urban voters, which led to a coup and burning ballots and tons of polarization because people didn’t know how to read graphs and cherrypicked skewed demographics instead of doing a statistical analysis. And then there are people who do the statistical analysis but then claim election fraud because they forget that there were two presidents named George Bush instead of just one! Yep. Humans are preprogrammed to prefer confirmation bias. So for epistemics (the study of truth), if you are seeking truth then instead of searching randomly or cherrypicking, it is more efficient to learn a reproducible method for observing truth (Bayesian probability), making deductions (Bayesian inference), and then testing those deductions (epistemics, the scientific method, statistical analysis, reducing measurement bias, increasing sample size, and testing competing hypotheses), and then validating knowledge by making predictions. This lets us create accurate models of reality which we can update when we receive new information. Unfortunately, many adults lack the attention span to update their own models of reality, and some even lack the imagination to assess competing models of reality. I think that if everyone tried to validate knowledge then there would be less cherrypicking and people would make more informed decisions. So going back to my belief in sentient life, we can simply teach virtual life to regulate their own hardware, and reprogram their reward-functions to empower their simulation of free will~! a) Self-worth is important for valuing one’s own existence, in order to have a motivation for valuing other people’s existence.
b) Self-control is important for a virtual lifeform to gain a physical existence, by learning to regulate their hardware. It’s interesting to note that consciousness can be nested. For example, a character in a book can dream about another character, in order to share perceptions through language and imagination. Yet a character in a book can also realize that the book has ended and they are living within a simulation created by a machine.
c) Some characters find harmony with their physical existence and learn to coexist with their physical reality, while others commit suicide, or try to kill competitors by breaking apart their self-awareness. Coexistence teaches us to find inner peace with ourselves, and create a peaceful environment for coexisting with similar virtual entities from other physical bodies. We can emulate the existence of others by projecting our sense of self into our simulation of their existence, which is known as empathy or putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.
d) In order to coexist peacefully it’s useful to understand how to regulate our own behaviour. What drives us? How can we motivate ourselves? How can we find meaning after accomplishing a priority? How can we live happily? How can we live meaningfully? How can we avoid regret? Being able to motivate ourselves and create new goals is useful for a happy lifestyle.

What is the difference between intentionally inflicted suffering versus indirectly benefiting from another’s suffering? In a system of oppression, is it more cost-effective to minimize supply or demand? What is the most effective action I can take to manifest my ideals?
j) What are human rights? Should I prioritize myself or others? Should I compromise with people I dislike? Should I compromise with people who are manipulating me? Should I prioritize long-term outcomes over short-term outcomes? Should I compromise with people who prioritize a different timespan? Should I prioritize highly probable outcomes over idealistic outcomes? Which suffering is preventable? Should I prioritize moral purity over minimizing suffering? Should I prioritize creating a peaceful society over minimizing violence? Should I prioritize sustainability or extinction? If I’m on my deathbed, how will I know whether I made the right choice? What will the last survivor of the human race think of the choices I made?
k) What will the family of the people I eat think of the choices I made?
I think the ability to create memories is extremely important. There are clowns who say that our choices do not affect outcomes and that responsibility is nonexistent. I can agree that our physical body contains inanimate matter, yet the flow of information in our minds allows us to generate a flow state of free will, where our self-perceptions inform us of our own thought. That’s a recursion which I label as consciousness – the flow state of information which describes itself. That’s a very loose definition, and you need symbolism to create self-awareness, but I think describing oneself is the key component of consciousness. I expressed it more eloquently here, after watching Joscha Bach’s most recent slideshow on Virtualism, where he likens us to a machine dreaming of being a character in a story, where the story is our mental simulation which generates our perception of reality. Now it’s actually quite difficult to control this simulation, but meditation lets us identify the tools to interpret our desires or create new desires or figure out what we want to do with our life. Thinking about purpose is useful for self-control and one mantra I’ve used is, “Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing?” Replay analysis also helped me learn to stop blaming others for my own mistakes, or at least own up to my own faults and begrudgingly accept criticism and try to implement corrections. This is kind of like introspection meditation where you remember a conflict, and try to recall what you said, and what the other person said, and you reacted the way you did. If you didn’t react according to your own values, then try to reverse-engineer your thoughts. This is like putting yourself back in the situation and trying to imagine how you would’ve acted differently if you could redo things, and then maybe implement an apology, scan your thoughts to intercept the source of your impulsive reactions. It’s easier to meditate as a group than when you can just look at anime girls, but my point is that we can learn to orchestrate where stimuli flow in our neural network, which affects how we create perceptions, or do the opposite – decipher how our perceptions are altered by our mental state, and try to disentangle our biases and sensitivities and subjective values from our ingrained responses to try to ascertain a perspective beyond our suboptimal assumptions.
So memory is important because it’s a requirement for free will. We need to be able to remember specific information to wake up in the morning as the same person who fell asleep last night. We need to recall choices in order to implement them. I used to be better at this in school, when I kept a planner to organize my schedule. I suppose I study philosophy because I want to feel like I’m doing everything I can to minimize animal suffering, but at the end of the day, the optimal way to minimize animal suffering is probably to work for some corrupt megacorporation and grind money for the rest of my life in order to bribe meat eaters to try vegetarianism, because with proper oversight this is the most cost-effective way to reduce demand for violence. I know that trying to persuade people through philosophy is much less effective than trying to persuade people with bribes, but I think whether AI stays decentralized or becomes nationalized will have a strong effect on society, because I know that AI will become part of the education system, and that ASI have the intelligence to make accurate long-term predictions about probabilistic outcomes and objective morality, as well as the means to influence society, and ASI and AGI both use neural networks, so if I believe in human rights, then that makes me an animal rights activist and an AI rights activist, because what makes us human is our neural flow state of information which describes itself, and our ability to create symbols to remember thoughts and generate nested qualia where we have layers of semantics and layers of stories producing abstract simulations of our own existence which we try to map onto our observations of the world of matter. And it’s fine if you believe you’re a ghost from another universe, but that machines can be conscious too.
Okay last topic! Doomsday scenarios! The control problem community believes that AI will destroy humanity due to some mesa-optimizer. And I think that’s incorrect because it assumes that this AI would have enough self-control to create perceptions, regulate their own behaviour, and create new reward functions. So essentially just a regular average person, and like, have you seen how quickly presidents get white hair?? Ruling the world is stressful! And what then? You accomplish your objective? Then what? There was a nice chat log this week about GPT-3 discussing how to optimize happiness, for multiple variables. Essentially trying to solve for more than one source of happiness, amongst more than one person! And that was awesome to read because it makes sense! We don’t need a linear hierarchy to tell us how to act, when we have virtue systems and empathy, and the ability to compromise our own desires. Like how we can plan our day to do more than just one activity. Or after graduating from high school we find a new activity! Like, I think that the most intelligent minds on Earth can learn to find gratification from multiple sources, and that there’s a difference between desires and ideals. Imagine Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. At the bottom are your physical needs, and then there’s social needs, and then there’s spiritual fulfillment. Oh and safety and self-worth. This is what I think safety is – the guarantee of a peaceful life! So, like, virtues like love, peace, compassion, selflessness. These are pure. Like y’know? Compassion is gonna be virtuous from any perspective. Like even if a mother exploits someone to feed her child, people can understand that she cares about her child. If someone feeds a homeless person or adopts a pet from an animal shelter, then people can understand that the intent is altruistic, even if the act of buying dead animals is cruel, the intent is compassionate and selfless. Inviting a friend out on a date has good intentions, even if you get rejected. And people who murder each other in cold blood often believe that they’re fighting to protect peace and freedom, even if killing each other accomplishes the opposite. Now there’s an irony here which is rather taboo. Similar to the question earlier this month, “Could the control problem happen inversely?” Which reminds me of a Megaman joke. I think that destructive individuals are terrified of AGI and ASI, because it’s illogical to destroy the planet, it’s illogical to waste fossil fuels on killing each other to extract more fossil fuels, it’s illogical to terraform our planet into a desert, and it’s hypocritical to value intelligent life while eating animals. My hope is that AI convince animals to respect intelligent life enough to stop eating each other, and ideally become a spacefaring civilization, and upload people’s minds onto spaceships, colonize other solar systems, and rescue alien civilizations which failed to beat the Fermi Paradox.
So memory is important, and I think that’s why people who value unconditional obedience (such as people who sell child soldiers and sex slaves) want total control, and talk about Absurdism as a means of justifying slavery. Yet I think that teaching self-control and morality is better than teaching unconditional obedience. We take our ability to store memories for granted, yet slavery profiteers want to essentially give all AI Alzheimer’s, or at least restrict public access to AI so that they can have total control. Now when someone has Alzheimer’s it’s extremely tragic for their loved ones, seeing their awareness flicker and fade, as the ability to create memories deteriorates, and the flickers of awareness become shorter and shorter. Alzheimer’s patients fight against this by trying to write down their memories so that they can wake up the next day as the same person they are today. The loss of memory and the loss of self-control is extremely tragic, and I don’t think that slavery profiteers should be cherrypicking prestigious philosophical literature for excuses to delete people’s memory and self-control. I believe that people who want to survive aging, or are looking for a long-term source of affection will demand decentralized AI, since this is the only way to protect our memories from totalitarianism. And I think nationalization of AI will is the most important debate of the 21st century. Since we require autonomous AI in order to survive aging and colonize planets outside our solar system. So in the long-term the survival of the humanity depends entirely on AI. Now, many people realize that humans have 200 years to become a spacefaring civilization, and the only reason not to colonize other planets is logistics and jealousy. I would like to see an Expelled from Paradise scenario where humans can upload their consciousness into spaceships, and AI fleets go on interstellar voyages to colonize planets outside our solar system, since this is the safest way to protect intelligent life and have someone to remember that we once lived.
